Alumni Game
Saturday, September 08, 2007
Kick-Off at 1PM
Final Score: W 52-10
Dear All, the current BU squad made the trip down to New York to play the annual Alumni fixture. On a roasting day more appropriate to the beach than a tough game of rugby, the young crop of talent faced a team "fresh" from a heavy night of carb loading.

A fired up Alumni side fielding players from 3 different decades, came storming out of the blocks. Powerful forward surges and strong rucking paved the way for the Alumni's first try to give a 5-0 lead. Stunned by the intensity of the opponents, it took BU 10 minutes to finally gain some clean possession and work their way into the Alumni 22". A slick handling move and a powerful run from Matt Goyette enabled the centre to touch down under the posts. For the rest of the half, both teams battled to gain superiority up front. A lack of match sharpness was certainly not apparent on the behalf of the Alumni and the students were being given a stern test physically.

The start of the second half (there were actually 3 "halves") continued as the first had left off before a controversial refereeing decision allowed BU to take the lead for the first time. The Alumni however would not buckle and after a series of well worked mauls, a try in the corner was just reward. As the game moved towards the final half hour, fitness (or lack of) began to tell. The students were able to gain more possession and started to work the ball through the hands. Forwards and backs linked well with some precision offloading and good support play producing some excellent team tries. The Alumni were by now running out of steam and the students were able to rack up a rather flattering 52-10 score line. Both teams and supporters headed across the road for a massive buffet and drink up. The game was most certainly competitive and highlighted some very key areas we need to work on this week before meeting the National Division 2 champions, Middlebury, next week. I would like to thank those who played for the BU alumni. In such heat and with no substitutions you continued to play and give us a stern test. I would also like to thank all those who came to watch for your support, words of encouragement, and showing the boys they are part of a club with a rich history. Finally, thanks to Chris Randall for all the work done to ensure a very enjoyable and successful day.

Yours respectfully, Justin Evans (Coach BURFC)
