Boston University's spring season finally got underway Saturday after a few false starts due to bad weather. We traveled to strong Div.2 side Bryant.
BU showed clear signs of rust in the first half, unable to get their passing game flowing and tending to exaggerate with forward drives. As the half progressed Bryant began to dominate both possession and territorially although the BU defence held firm to go in at half-time 0-0. Bryant continued in the second half where they left off in the first and were rewarded with an unconverted try.
BU gradually started to grow in confidence and finally began passing the ball wide. 3 Pete was by now snapping up any loose balls and skipper JD and Pete Yanulis charging at the Bryant defence and making some deft offloads. Halfbacks Josh and James imade intelligent use of the boot and Bryant's defence was under enormous pressure.
Following a series of forward drives and quality rucking prop Andrew barged his way over for a try to level the scores. The match seemed to be tilting in the visitor's favour. However, as BU attempted to run the ball out of their own 22' they lost possession giving away another try for the home side to go 10-5 up. The vistor's reply was immediate.
Following some great scrummaging from BU, the ball was fed to fly half James who rounded his opposite number and stepped inside the covering defence to score a fine solo try. Tristan stepped up to slot the conversion and give BU a deserved 12-10 lead for the first time in the game. The final mintutes were played out in the home side's half and to the relief and joy of the BU squad and supporters the ref blew the whistle to signal the end of the match. T
here then followed an A/B side game. The BU backline fielded three players who had never played a game of rugby before and Bryant also had a mixture of A-side players and rookies. BU continued their impressive passing and supporting game and notched up 3 tries to none to win 17-0. Tries from Miami Mike and debutant Kyle (2) with one conversion from Tristan rounded off the very satisfying morning's rugby.
I was particularly pleased to see the A side have the character to come from behind twice to win the game. After having had only a couple of sessions outside we were clearly rusty and have a lot of work to do but the victory was great for everyone invloved.
