Dear Alumni,
I hope you all doing well and somehow keeping warm if you're around Boston. Just wanted to let you know about what the rugby club is doing at the moment both on and off the field (well that should be gym and track for now!)
Training
Prior to the Christmas vacation I had a physical trainer who had recently returned from a 6 month stay with one of the top professional teams in South Africa come to our and do a series of tests on the boys. The tests ranged from bench press, to 40m sprint time to vertical leap etc. The players were then given a strength and conditioning program to follow and will be retested in a couple of weeks to monitor their progress. Judging by some of the differences in body shape during this short time, the results should be encouraging.
The physical trainer is kindly coming once a week to take a fitness sessions and he brings some fantastic ideas and methods to the team.
Spring season
Despite the 9.30 - 11pm training times, the lads have responded well and we are able to cover a lot of core skills during the week. In the pipeline for this spring season are games against Yale, Providence and the Beast of the East tournament.
Fundraising
The team is doing various initiatives to raise money for the spring season. We have groups of players working security and doing clean-ups at every track meet at BU. The money the players earn goes straight to the club. The team will also continue its relationship with one of the big moving companies in Boston. This year the team has made a stipulation that every member has to commit at least one fundrasing engagement.
Recruitment
Already we have received more than a dozen boys over the past couple of weeks. The team has rented a table at the GSU to attract new recruits and an introductory evening is planned in which videos of games will be shown and pizza given to anyone who is interested in joining the club.
Jerseys
Finally, we are going to buy a new set of jerseys for the new season. Our old red set is decidly more purple now! If you are interested in puchasing a jersey as a souvenir, gift or just for practical use drop me an email with the size you require. When I know the number of jerseys requested I can give you an exact price - obviously the more jerseys we order, the cheaper they become. Thank you.
Look forward to hearing from you.
All the best,
Justin Evans
