Coach’s Match Report
BU Romps over UMASS 45-12 in front of 300 supporters

UMASS were the visitors for our first home game of the season. Captain and club president Pete Mayers had orchestrated a massive promotion push the week before the game to entice spectators, including flyers and posters all over campus. Nickerson was the setting and with the National Anthem before the game, the BU dance team providing the halftime entertainment, and a crowd of 300 the only thing missing was the Mexican wave!

Both sides came out strongly, aiming to assert a physical advantage with some big hits and strong ball carrying. The forwards started well with rock solid scrummaging and a steady supply of lineout ball from Pete Yanulis. After seven minuets a well worked rolling maul resulted in a try for BU to take a 5-0 lead.  Instead of providing a lift for the BU pack, the forwards began a 20 minute period of some suicidal rugby, committing penalty after penalty. Hands in the ruck and continually being offside meant we were camped in our own half. UMASS scored two tries and at a 12-5 down BU were in danger of letting the game slip away from them. With ten minutes to of the half, BU finally decided to play within the rules and some terrific support play and ball retention got an already noisy crowd baying for the next try. With the last play of the half, on overlap was created to allow full back Nick Vornle to touch down and then add the conversion to draw level at the half.

Galvanised by this, BU came out in the second half as they finished the first. The forwards played a controlled, effective rucking game, making the hard yards up the field and with half back Alex Lin and Josh Hadden-Leggett making intelligent probing kicks, BU were well on top. The supply of quality ball to the dangerous backs enabled left wing Matt Goyette to score a stunning hat-trick of tries in just 7 minutes. Nick Vornle was again on target with the extras and BU looked almost home and dry at 31-12.  UMASS however would to lie down and started to look dangerous with some powerful running from their inside centre. BU weathered the storm however and were determined to have the last say in what was becoming a carnival atmosphere. Two more well worked tries
